COLUMBUS MAYOR PROCLAIMS ‘DREAM IT. DO IT. DAY’ CITING MANUFACTURING’S BENEFITS TO SOUTHEAST INDIANA

Dream It. Do It. Manufacturing Careers Campaign Spreads to 15 Regions, States

WASHINGTON, D.C., Oct. 23, 2008 – The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) today congratulated the Southeast Indiana Dream It. Do It. team as Mayor Fred Armstrong of Columbus, Indiana, declared October 23 “Dream It. Do It. Day” in recognition of the many benefits that manufacturing has to offer the Southeast Indiana regional economy.

“The Southeast Indiana Dream It. Do It. manufacturing careers awareness campaign is aligning educational offerings with the needs of manufacturers and increasing interest among young people about the high-paying careers in modern manufacturing,” said Emily DeRocco, president of The Manufacturing Institute and senior vice president at the NAM.

“We commend Cummins Inc. Vice Chair Joe Loughrey and John Burnett, chairman of the Southeast Indiana Dream It. Do It. team, for their leadership in building a pipeline of future advanced manufacturing workers to help boost the regional economy,” she said, adding that Loughrey also chairs Conexus Indiana, which has obtained the rights to license the Dream It. Do It. manufacturing careers awareness campaign across Indiana.

“In these difficult economic times, we must create new educational pathways to help more individuals prepare for high-paying manufacturing jobs and, in turn, help companies in Indiana and across the nation compete in global markets,” DeRocco said.

The mayor’s proclamation also is in recognition of the National Dream It. Do It. Executive Committee, comprised of regional campaign leaders whose semi-annual meeting is being hosted by the Southeast Indiana Dream It. Do It. team at the Cummins Light Duty Diesel Engine Plant in Columbus October 22-24.

The Dream It. Do It. campaign creates strong regional alliances of industry, government and education leaders to increase awareness and interest about manufacturing’s high-paying careers and help young people acquire the necessary education and skills.  Developed by the NAM and its research, education and workforce arm, The Manufacturing Institute, to address the shortage of qualified workers in manufacturing, the campaign piloted in the Kansas City region in 2005 and has rapidly spread to 15 regions and states across America.
