About Sandy Trowbridge

Alexander “Sandy” Trowbridge presided over the NAM from 1979 to 1989. Before coming to the NAM, he served in the Lyndon Johnson Administration, where at 38 he became the youngest Commerce Secretary in history. A former marine honored with the Bronze Star for his service in the Korean War, Trowbridge was known for his decisiveness and leadership on behalf of manufacturing. His commitment to the community is reflected in his years of dedicated public service, including terms as a trustee of the Marine Corps University Foundation and the Aspen Institute and membership on the National Commission on Social Security Reform. Trowbridge also devoted himself to numerous charitable efforts, including A Better Chance, which aids minority youth in attending top boarding schools; the Foundation for Management Education in Central America, which provides advanced business education in Central America; the International Executive Service Corps, which sends retired U.S. executives to serve in third world countries; the Washington Center, Junior Achievement and Outward Bound.
